faq

faq.
general. What is this?
Vella is an invite-only game exclusive to those on Coco [plurk.com profile] amplitude, Avery [plurk.com profile] daintily, and Amber's [plurk.com profile] twistingkage Plurk lists. It takes place in the Animal Crossing Universe.

Characters will receive a mysterious "Nook Ticket" that, upon touching it, will put them into a deep sleep. Suddenly, they will wake up as shooting stars descending rapidly towards the shore of a mysterious island. Once they’ve gotten adjusted, characters are tasked with turning the island into a desirable, inhabitable space for villagers to live in through teamwork, creativity, and innovation. Weekly goals and eventually quests will be posted to help characters with the progression of the island — though these will also depend on character choices — and characters will have the opportunity to host events to attract villagers and visitors alike to their new civilization.

What is the format of the game?
Vella runs on a 1 OOC day = 1 IC day ratio. All interactions will take place on the log community. There will be an intro log posted on the day the game starts. After that, there will be a weekly log put up every Monday with prompts and opportunities to interact with the setting and form CR. Top levels for each day of the week will be posted. Special events will typically take place every weekend, with occasional weekday events.

That being said, we do not have a set comment count for AC. More information can be found below.

When will the game start, and how long will it run for?
Vella is slated to begin on Sunday, June 28 at 3PM EST. We are looking at running the game for 10 weeks max.

What are the player/character/canon caps like?
Players are limited to 1 character each. We’ll take up to 25 35 characters but will run with as little as 12. We are capping canons at 3 characters per canon. OCs who are considered customizable/silent protagonists will be classified under their respective canons. Otherwise, OCs are considered a singular canon. Mod characters do not count towards the player/character/canon cap.

Franchises with installments that have individual storylines (i.e. Final Fantasy XIV and XV, Fire Emblem Awakening and Three Houses) will be treated as separate canons. That being said, there is an overall franchise cap of 6 characters. For example, you can have 3 characters from FE: Awakening, 2 from FE: Radiant Dawn, and 1 from FE: Three Houses, making up 6 FE characters total. We will not allow, say, 4 characters from FE: Awakening.

Do I need a reserve to apply?
Yes. Reserves will open on Saturday, June 20 at 12PM EST and will close on Friday, June 26 at 12PM EST. Applications will open at 3PM EST the same day and will close on Friday, June 26 at 11:59PM EST.

A TDM will go up on Sunday, May 31.

Is there an activity check?
Yes. Since Vella is a short-term game, we’d like players to be active. We will have a weekly AC system that will only require a short write-up of activities your character has been involved in during the AC period. Write-ups don't need to be long! Just a few bullet points will suffice. We do not have a set comment count for AC; as long as we see that your character's doing something, whether it's forming CR or engaging with the setting, you're good! AC will be open for submissions throughout the week, close every Saturday at 11:59PM EST and open again the following Monday.

Vella operates on a two strike system; missing one week of AC is one strike. You can clear the strike by making AC the following week. If we see that strikes are a recurring problem though (getting a strike -> clearing it -> getting a strike again), we may contact you about activity. Missing two activity checks in a row will count as two strikes, and you will be swept from the game.

The reason why AC is weekly is so that we have a clearer idea of what missions to put up for the following week. Please note that we will not put up AC warning lists.

applications. Who can I app?
Fandom characters and non-native OCs. Canon OCs are okay as long as they a) are independent of/do not impact the main storyline and b) do not have any ties to any canon characters. Silent and customizable protagonists are fine as long as there’s enough canon evidence (dialogue, introspection, etc.) for them to have a personality. WoL OCs and minor characters fall under the silent/customizable protagonist clause. Characters must be able to communicate in some way. Canons must have English translations available.

We will not accept characters based off of celebrities, native OCs, AUs, CRAUs, or characters from Animal Crossing. Characters based on historical figures such as Shakespeare from Fate/ are acceptable.

What if I want to play from a newer canon?
Canons (and canon points, for those who are playing from ongoing series) must have been out for at least one month.

Is there an age requirement?
OOCly, all players must be at least 18 years old. ICly, we don't have an age requirement.

Can I app a character who isn’t human?
Sure! However, they will be nerfed on a case-by-case basis. For example, vampires can keep their aversion to sunlight, but will no longer need to feed off of blood and can eat regular food instead. Please contact a mod either via PM, PP, or by asking here on the FAQ (preferred) if you are apping a non-human so we can give you your nerfs!

What if my character's a giant?
    They'll be shrunken to 6'5"!

What if my character was injured before arrival or died in canon?
Injured characters will be healed up. Characters who are dead canonically will be revived and given a sentient body.

mechanics. Since this is Animal Crossing, will our characters transform into animals?
We are giving players three options: A) Keep your character 100% human/their original form, B) Keep your character in their original form with animal traits (i.e. cat ears and tail), or C) go full animal. Should you choose B or C, (as of 5/15) you may choose any animal species you'd like, in-game or not. We will allow animals with the appearance of a mythical creature (i.e. horse as unicorn for Julian, alligator as a dragon for Drago).

What happens if a character is on hiatus or dropped?
Dropped characters will return back home. Hiatused characters will fall into a deep sleep, though you can opt to go on autopilot until you return. We prefer that hiatuses last no longer than two weeks due to the short-term nature of the game; if you need to extend it, however, please contact us and we'll see how we can help!

What if I dropped previously but want to app back in?
We may be able to find a way to write you back in, though this is all circumstantial. Send a message to the mod team and we'll see what we can do.

Can my character keep their powers?
No, unfortunately. All powers and magical abilities will be nerfed upon arrival. There may be an opportunity for characters to regain them temporarily, hence why there's a section for abilities on the application. Otherwise they will be completely powerless. Any magical items characters may be wearing upon arrival will lose all magical properties. Weapons will not be present.

Then...what will my character be able to bring from home?
Just the clothes on their back! Any supplies, bags and the like will be gone upon their arrival.

Will my characters be able to get anything from home back?
Yes! We will have Rewards in which you can redeem threads for cool IC items. These items include DIY recipes to craft cool items, clothing, furniture...maybe even rare items down the line! Characters' belongings will also be added to the mix, and there will be a section on the application ("Regains") in which you can list the items that you want your characters to potentially regain during their stay here.

It is possible to end up with items belonging to other characters. If this is the case, we highly suggest contacting the players of those characters to let them know.

How does the rewards system work?
Here's how the reward system works: Every five comments from you = one RNG'd item. Each thread you turn in must have a minimum of 3 comments from you. You can combine threads for comment counts as long as each thread meets the 3-comment minimum.

Each thread can only be turned in once for each thread partner (i.e. A thread between Character A and Character B can be turned in once by A and once by B, even if there are more comments that come afterwards). For example, you can turn in Thread X with 10 comments for 2 items; after that, though, that thread may not be used for rewards again even if there are more comments that come afterwards.

Items will OOCly be distributed on Mondays and Thursdays. ICly, items will arrive in characters' mailboxes as gifts attached to letters from Tom Nook on Tuesdays and Fridays. Isn't he generous?

setting. Where are we?
You're on a planet similar to earth in many ways; the main difference, though, is that this planet is inhabited by anthropomorphic animals. Judging by the warm weather, it seems like the planet's current season is summer. Your exact location is unknown, though by looking at the water surrounding the land, the sandy beaches and the overgrown plants, you can discern that you're on some kind of island.

Why is there a raccoon talking to me?!
Oh, that's just Mr. Tom Nook! He's the head of a corporation called Nook Inc. and found this island while scouting out locations for his Deserted Island Getaway Package project. He'll be the one helping you out primarily during your stay here.

How did I get here?
That's something that we can't wait for you to find out!

Is there any tech here that I can use to phone home?
Fortunately, each of you will be given a cellphone (known as a NookPhone) that you can use! ...Unfortunately, any attempts to phone home are fruitless. The phone only comes with a list of contacts, though only Tom Nook and your fellow outsiders are listed, and a photo app. You'll also find that you can only send mass texts to everyone and get alerts from Tom Nook himself. More features may be added in later, but this is all you have to start out with.

What if I want to send a message to someone specifically?
Starting out, you won't be able to. All individual interactions have to be face-to-face. However, there will be an opportunity to message individuals down the line, so keep your eyes peeled for that! The island is large, after all!

What about currency?
Tom Nook buys...pretty much everything, so go ahead and pick some fruits, catch some bugs and fish, pick up some weeds — he'll give you money for it. Bells, to be exact!

OOCly, we will not be keeping track of how many bells you're earning, so feel free to handwave selling things to Mr. Nook and assume your characters are earning money for the things they bring him. Fruits, common wildlife, and other natural resources will go for just under 400 bells each. Rare fish and bugs will be available through other methods! Weeds will only go for 100 bells each. If there's anything else you'd like to sell, contact the mods.

Is there a language barrier?
Nope! You'll be able to understand everyone, animals and humans alike, including those who are native to this new world you've found yourselves in.

I got stung by a wasp/scorpion!
Ouch! Surprisingly though, bites aren’t poisonous or lethal here. Wasp stings will hurt and make your face all swollen. Get some medicine to heal yourself up! It works instantly, by the way.

Get stung by a scorpion, or by a wasp again without taking medicine...and you’ll faint for a few seconds! Don’t worry though — you’ll wake up right where you passed out.

Note: This mechanic is RNG’d in the case of wasps; they show up during exploration requests if you get unlucky. Please let us know if you’d like to opt out of this entirely. It is entirely optional when it comes to scorpions; you’re free to play with it on your own, as they show up occasionally during evenings, but this is not mandatory nor will it be a major plot point. We may also do a mystery island event for them, but there will be an alternative event for those who’d like to opt out of it. Please make sure to label top levels appropriately when using this mechanic; we will be sure to do the same.

So... What is this about DIYs?
Characters will be able to obtain recipe cards that they can use to craft a variety of things - tools, furniture, decor, clothing. There's a variety of things that can be crafted as long as characters can gather the materials!

How do I get DIY cards?
You can get them as rewards and as part of exploration - they can be found in balloon gifts and washed up in bottles on the beach. Sometimes, you can even stumble upon a villager crafting something and they'll be more than happy to pass the recipe on to you!

    How do DIYs work?
It's, well, some sort of magic! There's no real explanation for how it works - you just gather everything you need, pop over to a work bench, and after a bit of tinkering you've got your creation! It seems like it should be more difficult than that, huh?

Is it possible for a character to fund a bridge all on their own? as example, Dokja has more than enough bells to do exactly that and I thought it funny to set a bridge plot down and it's immediately paid off.
